Ordinary Time is anything but ordinary. It is the time in our Liturgical Year when we focus on one particular Gospel and its presentation of the life and ministry of Jesus. This year’s Gospel is the Gospel of Luke. Luke is the shortest and earliest of the Gospels. It tries to show Jesus as Messiah by constant references to the Old Testament Prophets.
Who then is this Jesus who is the focus of our faith? He is the third Person of the Blessed Trinity. He is the Word of God made flesh through the instrumentality of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He is a great Prophet. He is a compassionate healer of body and soul.
In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, we are called by our Baptism to be agents of God’s compassion and mercy in our daily lives. We are to forgive and we have been forgiven. We are to work ceaselessly for peace and justice. We are to be our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers. In short we are to be the flesh and blood manifestations of Jesus and his mission and ministry. There is nothing ordinary about that.
May these days of Ordinary Time provide each of us with the tools and the time to grow more fully in the life that Jesus offers us. We are ordinary people who are called to do extraordinary things.
