The Church celebrates a brief 4 week period of Ordinary Time before we enter into the season of Lent on Ash Wednesday, February 10th. The focus of this short period is on the developing ministry of Jesus and on the call of the first disciples. Jesus defines his mission as bringing the Good News to the poor and the oppressed. The role of his disciples is to learn from him, so that, they will be able not only to share in his ministry, but to carry it on after he completes his earthly life.
As today’s disciples, we are tasked with carrying on Jesus’ ministry in our day. We are called to feed the hungry, cloth the naked, shelter the homeless, and to bring justice and mercy to the abandoned, the outcast and those on the fringes of society.
How timely this message is this year, as we celebrate the Jubilee Year of Mercy proclaimed by our Holy Father Pope Francis. The Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy provide us with a beautiful way to not only celebrate the Jubilee, but also to guide us in fulfilling our responsibility to bring the Good News to the Poor.
I encourage you to pay particular attention to the Prayers and Scripture Readings that will be used during this brief segment of Ordinary Time. I also encourage you to begin thinking now, about what Penitential practices you use during the upcoming season of Lent.
Jesus came so that we might share the fullness of life. It is his gift to us. Let us never be stingy in sharing God’s gifts to us with others.
Fr. Peter Pagones, Pastor
