The Ascension of the Lord marks the end of Jesus’ earthly ministry and the beginning of His call to action to all who believe in him. He goes to the Father, to abandon us, but to empower us. He goes to the Father in order that they might send the Holy Spirit upon the Church and all baptized persons. Through the Holy Spirit He will fulfill His promise to with us until the end of the world.
The Scripture for the feast of the Ascension usually includes reading from “the conclusion of the Gospel…” “and the beginning of the Acts of the Apostles”. This done purposefully. We are told the we are those to whom Jesus has entrusted the continuation of His ministry. The Apostles are asked, “why do you stand here looking into the sky, this Jesus has gone before you into Galilee”. Thus, this Jesus, goes before us into our towns and cities, villages, places of work, our homes and our hearts.
On the feast of Pentecost, just ten days away, he will pour out the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and give to them the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit. This is the same Spirit given to us at Baptism and the same gifts given to us at our Confirmation.
Let us answer the Lord’s call to action to be agents of change in our world as we strive to build his Kingdom of Love, Justice, and Peace here on earth.
